“I walk past them. I always yell over my shoulder…call the police,” Amy Nicely he said on Facebook.

Receipt checks have been a source of controversy among many Walmart shoppers in recent months.

Customers are getting tired of these tedious checks.

Some have shared the tricks they use to try and avoid them on Facebook and X.

“I wave at them and keep walking,” said one customer.

“I just keep walking out the door, thanks,” read another comment.

“If you want to see my receipt, chase me, baby.”

“NEVER!! I wait long enough in line and I’m not wasting any more time letting them check my stuff,” one customer wrote.

It seems that many buyers are okay with trying to avoid these checks.

Walmart first introduced receipt checks in an attempt to reduce shoplifting.

But some believe that these anti-theft measures are useless.

“Sometimes I don’t even pick up the bag and throw all the paid items in my bag, they don’t even check, they just show the receipt and keep stepping,” said one customer.

“What’s the point of checking my ticket? A ticket means I paid for my items,” another customer commented.

Other shoppers questioned the legality of these receipt checks.

“There is no law I have to show my receipt. Have a Cool day,” said one comment.

A Lawyer’s Top 5 Receipt Checking Tips

Los Angeles attorney Camron Dowlatshahi spoke with The US Sun about receipt checks and a customer’s rights and options when asked to show their receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it’s in the store, it’s completely legal. “Apparently there is nothing illegal about this. You are still on the company premises and the reason for doing this is to avoid theft”, confirms Dowlatshahi.
  2. However, if they’re kicking you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location is important,” he explained. “If you’re outside the store, you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of stealing and that you have to show the receipt, I think it’s a little bit of a different situation because now you’re in your way.”
  3. Although customers can say no to receipt checks, it can cause problems if you do so and the store suspects you of stealing. “You might say no, maybe it will create an unnecessary hassle for you because now you might have the police coming to your house and following up,” Dowlatshahi said.
  4. If you’re being blocked from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you may have legal action – but the store must have detained you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus to do it,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a client has been emotionally traumatized by being detained for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] process.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s a very simple thing to do. If you haven’t stolen anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

“They can’t force you to show the receipt. It’s an invasion of privacy,” said another person.

The overwhelming majority of comments seem to criticize the policy, but there are still some buyers who are more understanding.

“Oh my God… it’s not that serious… if you have nothing to hide, what’s the problem?” said one buyer.

“Pick your battles… standing there arguing about a 2 second check isn’t worth it.”

OTHER RECEIPT CHECKS

Walmart isn’t the only retailer to implement this unpopular anti-theft measure.

Kroger employs similar measures at some of its U.S. stores.

The retail giant announced that it has introduced pickup checks at six locations in the Cincinnati, Ohio area in May 2024.

And Kroger shoppers were not impressed by the news.

“All this does is delay and annoy customers (especially if it’s a peak time that makes people wait in line after they’ve already finished their purchase), so WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT??” said one frustrated shopper.

“I think I’m going to start walking past them and challenging them to do something.”
