Warnings have been issued for several areas on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku – including Kagoshima and Ehime, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Authorities urged people to immediately move to higher ground as one-metre waves were expected to hit the coast.

The 6.9-magnitude quake was followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake on the island of Kyushu at a depth of 18 miles (29 kilometers), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It comes after Japan was hit by a devastating earthquake on New Year’s Day – leaving 318 people dead and thousands of homes destroyed.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami with waves reaching heights of 21 feet.

Three people are still missing after the disaster.
