Newly released body camera footage shows the moment two police officers tried to stop Thomas Matthew Crooks from a rooftop seconds before he allegedly shot former President Donald Trump last month.
The footage was taken from two Butler Township Police officers, who tried to stop Crooks, 20, from firing his AR-15 rifle.
The attack left Trump with bleeding ears as he spoke from the podium during his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Two other people were injured and firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed while protecting his family.
“Damn, so close, bro,” said an officer who was hoisted up. “Man, he turned to me.”
One officer can be seen hoisting another onto the roof where Crooks was located – with a direct line in view of Trump.
As the officer scaled the building, Crooks pointed his gun at Trump and the crowd.
The officer is seen lowering his head and losing control of the edge of the roof, falling about eight feet to the ground and twisting his ankle, Butler Township Manager Thomas Knights said. Fox News.
“I’m very upset. We can’t find him,” a police officer can be heard saying.
“Before you motherfuckers came here, I raised my head like an idiot alone, man,” said the police officer who climbed onto the roof.
“Then he turned around and I fell… I was screaming, ‘Bro, fuck, at the top of the room.’
“Damn, aren’t we on the same frequency?”
Butler Township Police The Department released a statement that the officer was unable to draw his weapon because he was hanging from the building.
The footage also shows Crooks as officers surrounded his body after he was killed by counter snipers.
In other body camera video, officers appeared confused about why the roof Crooks fired from was unmanned.
“I thought you were on the roof?” said an officer.
There also appeared to be confusion over whether Crooks had been neutralized and why he had not been eliminated before opening fire.
“If you all had a gun up there… I would have shot him,” one officer can be heard saying.
“He wouldn’t have pulled a gun up there,” an officer said on body camera.
