Chase Schaedler, a student at Waldron High School, was recently appointed to the Michigan Department of Education’s Student Advisory Council.

Jenn Feather is a student success counselor at Waldron Schools and said Schaedler, who is going into the 11th grade, deserved the nomination.

“Chase is a leader and a personable young man. He has sensible reactions in all circumstances and is able to handle any situation with consideration and maturity,” she said. “Earlier this summer, Chase was selected to attend the MyLead Michigan Youth Leadership Conference, which improved his self-confidence, leadership skills and critical thinking.”

Feather added that this is a unique opportunity for a Waldron student.

“I’m excited to see Chase interact with students from Michigan’s different populations. This opportunity will allow her to network with our neighboring schools so she can be a voice for small rural schools and the farming community,” she said.

One project Schaedler will participate in is the board’s “Safe Spaces” initiative, which addresses racism in the state’s public schools.

Through the schedule, which is for the 2024-2025 school year, Schaedler will meet monthly with other students from across the state.

“Chase will work with State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice and the other students on the board to implement MDE initiatives related to Michigan students, not necessarily from an academic perspective, but from a social and emotional aspect,” Feather said, “A student from little unknown Waldron in tiny Hillsdale County will be helping to improve the education of students across Michigan.”
