It then hits the ground in the residential area and explodes in a fireball, sending black smoke into the sky.

Images shown by local media showed a burning wreckage on the ground with the fuselage destroyed in flames.

Bodies could be seen among the rubble.

A nearby house was also on fire as a helicopter flew overhead.

The Brazilian airline confirmed the accident in a statement to local media G1.

The statement from the airline Voepass Linhas Aéreas confirmed that the plane took off with 62 people on board.

Four of the people would be crew, with 58 passengers.

Firefighters said the plane crashed in the city of Vinhedo, in the state of São Paulo, but gave no further details.

Flight 2283 would have taken off from Cascavel, in the state of Paraná, heading to the main airport in the city of São Paulo, Guarulhos.

The statement said: “Voepass has taken all measures to support those involved.

“There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.”

At an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence.
