Officials in the city of Pasadena, which is near the quake’s epicenter, said the tremor caused a water pipe inside City Hall to burst, forcing employees to temporarily evacuate the building. But otherwise, no major damage was identified.

Still, the effects were felt much further away, including in Hollywood, about 15 miles west of South Pasadena, where the earthquake sent buildings rattling and rocking back and forth.

Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology, said the quake likely occurred on a shallow fault similar to the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. This 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck 12 miles east of Los Angeles and caused eight deaths and substantial property damage.

It’s not yet known exactly which fault ruptured on Monday, but Jones said on X that the area has “several faults that stack on top of each other, none of which come to the surface.”

The National Weather Service said no tsunami was expected.
