“This interview will go down in history,” Donald Trump had written hours before his planned conversation with Elon Musk. Well, maybe, if someone could actually hear it.

For nearly an hour, millions of people tried to log into Spaces, the part of X designed for live audio discussions. An error message appeared saying, “This space is not available.”

For the lucky few who made it through, the prize was lo-fi techno music played on a loop. I think I might hear it in my nightmares for the next few days.

this interview It was the biggest test for X servers since Mr. Musk took over Twitter and quickly laid off 80% of its workforce. It’s fair to say it wasn’t going so well.

Some recalled the campaign launch of Ron DeSantis, the Republican primary contender who was interviewed by Musk on X last year. On that occasion, the audio stream was affected by dropouts, garbled audio, and the app crashed.

Elon Musk said that this time X must have been the victim of a massive cyber attack. But some were skeptical that that was the cause.

Nearly 45 minutes after the scheduled start time, Musk accepted defeat. “We will proceed with a smaller number of simultaneous listeners and then release the raw audio immediately afterwards,” he wrote.

Once it got going, a love began between two of the most powerful people in the world.

Musk opened by saying that this forum was not going to be “adversarial.” It was going to be a “conversation” aimed at “open-minded, independent voters,” he said. It was, in fact, a donald trump sermon, punctuated by occasional murmurs of assent from Mr. Musk.

For more than 20 minutes he talked about the attempted murder, with few interjections. Trump retold how he had narrowly escaped death because he turned his head at the last moment to refer to a graph behind him showing levels of border crossings.

“Illegal immigration saved my life,” he declared, to the feminine laughter of the richest man in the world. This was not an incisive political interview. It wasn’t even particularly interesting.

Trump hoped to stop the dizzying success of Kamala Harris’ campaign with this interview. Just four weeks ago, she was leading in all seven swing states, but Harris has dramatically reversed that lead in three of those swing states.

Trump was ridiculed for saying Harris had “gone black” and is still struggling to identify a successful line of attack against the vice president. There was a strange moment in a conversation with Musk in which he said that he saw Harris on the cover of Time magazine. “She looks like the most beautiful actress who ever lived,” he said. “She was a drawing and, in reality, she looked a lot like a great first lady, Melania. She didn’t look like Kamala. But, of course, she is a beautiful woman.”

I’m not sure what exactly he was referring to, but it probably won’t change the course of this election.

The format was more like a Donald Trump campaign rally, with all the usual talking points ticked off. He complained that NATO members do not spend enough on their own defense. He positioned himself as the political strongman capable of taking on the leaders of North Korea and Russia. He repeated his argument that Jews who voted Democratic should “have their heads examined.”

But there wasn’t much new information about Trump’s views. However, the evolution of Musk’s political stance continues to fascinate.

In 2022, he said in a post on

But now he is a fully paid up member of the fan club. “I stood in line for six hours to shake Obama’s hand,” he said.

“Historically I was a moderate Democrat. But now I feel like we’re at a critical juncture for the country. For people in the moderate camp, I think they should support Donald Trump for president.”

His support is powerful and he is now, without a doubt, a central figure in this political cycle. Whether he will be a decisive influence is another question.
