Initial jobless claims in California increased in the week ending Aug. 3 compared with the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported.
New claims for unemployment benefits, an indicator of layoffs, rose to 41,838 in the week ended Aug. 3, up from 40,787 the previous week, the Labor Department said.
U.S. unemployment claims fell to 233,000 last week, a drop of 17,000 claims from the previous week’s 250,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Utah saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 44.0%. The Virgin Islands, meanwhile, recorded the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims falling 90.4%.
