OSHKOSH — Oncologist Anthony Phillips secured the Republican ticket for a new State Senate District 18 after unseating Appleton businessman Blong Yang, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary.

Phillips is expected to face Appleton Ald. Kristin Alfiem, who was the only Democratic candidate, in the Nov. 5 general election for the redrawn district that now encompasses the cities of Appleton, Menasha, Neenah and Oshkosh.

Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Feyen was recalled from the district and is now seeking re-election in State Senate District 20.

Incumbent State Assembly District 53 Senator Michael Schraa lost his bid for re-election in District 55 as current Winnebago County Board Supervisor Nate Gustafson retained the Republican nomination.

Realtor Kyle Kehoe was uncontested on the Democratic ticket and will face Gustafson in a reshuffled district that encompasses Grand Chute, Fox Crossing, Winneconne and Omro.

Kevin Peterson, incumbent of State Assembly District 40, redrawn to District 57, won the Republican candidacy over real estate professional Duane Wilson and will now face Ruth Caves, who was uncontested on the Democratic ticket.

Former Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert and retired environmental health and safety manager Duane Shukoski were uncontested in District 53 for the Republican and Democratic races, respectively.

Kaufert is returning to political life after a two-year hiatus after incumbent Michael Schraa was removed from the district under the new maps.

Current Democratic Senator and former Oshkosh Mayor Lori Palmeri and Republican Tim Paterson — the Winnebago County Board Supervisor for District 11 — were also unchallenged in State Assembly District 54.

It was a similar story in District 39, where Republican Alex Dallman, who previously represented District 41, and Democratic professional school educator Chris Gordon were unchallenged.

Multimillionaire Sunwest Bank CEO Eric Hovde will face two-term Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin after comfortably winning the Republican bid for U.S. Senate.

Hovde won the Republican primary over the chair of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Republicans Rejani Raveendran and Sharon farmer Charles Barman.

Former businessman Tony Wied secured the 8th Congressional District Republican candidacy for both former Rep. Mike Gallagher’s unexpired term and the vote for a two-year term.

Wied defeated former state Sen. Roger Roth and 1st Senate District incumbent Andre Jacque to face obstetrician and gynecologist Kristin Lyerly, the only Democratic candidate on the card.

Both Republican incumbent Glenn Grothman and Democratic candidate John Zarbano were uncontested for the 6th U.S. Congressional District.

Current Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr ran as an independent and was unopposed for the position.

So did Republican incumbents Julie Barthels and Amber Hoppa, who were uncontested for Winnebago County clerk and treasurer, respectively.

Black Wolf City Clerk Susan Snyder won her Republican primary against former Oshkosh Mayor and current council member Paul Esslinger, and will now face Democrat Christopher Larson for the position.

Voters rejected two constitutional amendment questions that sought to give the Legislature more control over the spending of federal resources.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s results.
