Tasha Haefs allegedly claimed the “devil” was trying to attack her when she called 911 in February 2022, according to a criminal complaint
A woman from Missouri accused of beheading her son and his dog in 2022 was found competent to stand trial.
Tasha Haefs, 37, was arrested on February 15, 2022, and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of her son, Karvel Stevens, 6.
In June 2022, she was found mentally incompetent to stand trial and the case was suspended while she underwent treatment, court records show, USA Today reports.
The Missouri Department of Mental Health monitored his progress and filed a confidential report requesting the case proceed, court records show, according to USA today.
On Friday, a Jackson County 16th Circuit Court judge granted a motion for the case to move forward, KMBC reports.
The alleged crime came to light on February 15, 2022, when Kansas City police responded to Haefs’ home after receiving a call from an unidentified woman inside, saying that “the devil was trying to attack her.” WDAF-TV reported.
When officers arrived, they allegedly saw blood and hair on the front steps and front door and could hear a woman singing inside, the criminal complaint against Haefs alleged.
The woman who lived in the home refused to answer the door for officers, according to the complaint.
But the chanting got louder, officers said, according to the complaint.
“While attempting to make contact with the occupant, officers observed what appeared to be the severed head of a deceased person near the entrance of the residence,” authorities alleged in the complaint.
In the short time that the police were there, they discovered that the neighbors had not seen the children who lived in the house for a few days.
“Officers fearing for the safety of any children remaining inside the residence forced entry under exigent circumstances and took the female occupant into custody without incident,” the complaint said.

Officers searched the home and found no other children, but “located the decapitated body of a child near the front door of the residence,” the complaint states.
Police also found a dead dog in the house, KSHB-TV reported.
“The suspect had visible blood and two knives with visible blood were observed in plain view throughout the residence,” the complaint states. A bloodstained screwdriver was also recovered from the scene.
When speaking with police, “Haefs admitted to killing the victim in the bathtub and decapitating the victim,” the complaint alleged.
The child’s death was ruled a homicide.
Haefs’ arraignment is scheduled for April 29. His attorney did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
