SEVERAL small houses appearing along a highway have sparked fury among neighboring residents who say the buildings have no place in the area.

Makeshift homes have been appearing on the sides of a Los Angeles highway near Highland Park, made from a variety of materials.

One of the structures has a staircase leading up to it, while another is complete with a stone wall and barbecue area in front.

“It doesn’t belong here. This is public property,” neighboring resident Mike Ancheta told the CW affiliate. KTLA.

“But that’s not what it should be used for. This is dangerous. As you can see, someone is cooking outside over an open fire. They are stealing electricity. I mean, come on.

Enrique Rodriguez, another neighbor, tried to sympathize with the residents of the small, growing village.

“It’s a shame some of these people are here,” he said.

“I wish the best for these people. I can’t regret the mistakes they made.”

The small houses are built by homeless people using tarpaulins, scrap metal and tents.

One of them is said to be completely advanced, made with electric lighting, a walkway and even a net.

The US Sun previously reported on a man named Cesar who lived at the camp.

“It has electricity, a stove, a refrigerator for food; it’s in good condition,” said Cesar, who described his home to the local ABC affiliate. KABC.

He has lived near the Highlands for the past four years and revealed he could not afford to live anywhere else.

“For my job, I can’t do that and move somewhere else because the rent is too high,” he said.

Ulysses Chávez, who witnessed the encampment, believes the city should resolve the housing issue.

“It’s a mess,” he said. “They should lower the rent. They should cut down on all kinds of things, especially in Los Angeles.”

This doesn’t belong here. This is public property.

Last week, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass addressed residents’ concerns and asked them to donate to a campaign to create affordable housing.

“We’re not going to hide people, but what we’re going to do is shelter people,” she said.

“The crisis on our streets is nothing short of a disaster.”

Board member Eunisses Hernandez also released a statement following the news.

“Our awareness teams are working to urgently find accommodation for the people living in this camp and resolve the security problems posed by this structure and its proximity to the river.

“As the city continues to face a housing and homelessness crisis, there are currently not enough housing options available to accommodate the more than 46,000 people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles.

“Our office believes this status quo is unacceptable and is working to resolve this crisis urgently, with short- and long-term solutions.”

The US Sun reached out to Council member Eunisses Hernandez for comment.
