A MAN in Mexico bought a pair of US$13,000 (237,000 pesos) Cartier earrings for US$13 (237 pesos).

Rogelia Villarreal, a Mexican doctor, saw an ad for a $13 pair of Cartier earrings while browsing Instagram.

The luxury brand mistakenly forgot to add three zeros to the price on its website, allowing Villarreal to purchase two pairs of earrings at an extreme discount.

This purchase began a months-long struggle between Villarreal and Cartier.

Villarreal posted on X that he almost broke out in a cold sweat after seeing the low price of the earrings.

As soon as Villarreal made its purchase, Cartier attempted to cancel its order.

The brand tried to make up for the mistake by offering Villarreal a bottle of champagne and a leather accessory.

Villarreal refused this compensation and demanded that he receive the earrings he paid for.

When Cartier did not send the earrings, Villarreal contacted Cartier threatening to file a complaint with Mexico’s federal consumer protection agency.

Villarreal cited a federal consumer protection law in Mexico which states that companies must comply with its terms and conditions.

Cartier still refused to ship the earrings, prompting Villarreal to take the issue to Mexico’s federal consumer protection agency.

Villareal told the New York Times that the consumer agency called Cartier into arbitration and made several attempts to mediate a settlement.

Before the planned mediation hearing, Villarreal received an email from Cartier informing him that his request would be honored.

Four days after receiving the email, Villarreal received two pairs of Cartier earrings in the mail.

“The war is over”, Villarreal posted in X.

On April 26th, Villarreal shared a photo of the two earrings wrapped in a Cartier box.

“Once upon a time in December,” wrote Villarreal.

“I’m excited,” Villarreal told the New York Times, “especially for my mother. These earrings are for her.

This dispute generated great debates on social media, with a Mexican senator giving her opinion.

“Children: what the buyer of the Cartier earrings did is not correct”, Senator Lilly Téllez posted on X.

“It is wrong to be an opportunist and take advantage of a mistake at someone else’s expense, and to abuse the law, even if it is in your favor, and cheat a business. It is more important to be honored than to have a pair of Cartier earrings.”

Since receiving the earrings, Villarreal has withdrawn its complaint with the Mexican federal consumer protection agency.
