WESTMORELAND, Kansas – One person died Tuesday when a tornado ripped through the small northeast Kansas town of Westmoreland, authorities said.
Pottawatomie County officials said on Facebook that a tornado touched down in the city Tuesday night, damaging several structures. First responders were conducting searches in Westmoreland to assess damage and look for people who may have been injured.
A Pottawatomie County spokesperson confirmed the single fatality in a press release sent to the media. The name of the person who died was being withheld pending notification of the family.
Westmoreland is about 45 miles northwest of Topeka.
Images posted on social media showed a tornado in Westmoreland, as well as damaged homes, uprooted trees and an overturned truck.
Tuesday’s storms came just two days after tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma on Sunday, killing four people and injuring at least 100. On Friday, tornadoes ripped through Nebraska and Iowa, demolishing homes and businesses and leaving one person dead.
