A skimmer is a device designed to trick users into believing it is a regular credit card machine.

However, this machine will steal your financial information as soon as a card is inserted.

The first skimmer was found at the Wellesley store on April 24, according to a press release issued by the Fox affiliate WFXT.

Stores were notified of the threat and police began an investigation.

On the same day, seven other devices were found.

At the Bridgewater store, a skimmer was found at 1:20 p.m., just three minutes after it was installed at 1:17 p.m., according to store security video.

Later that day, skimmers were found at Roche Bros. in Watertown, Westwood, Natick, Downtown Crossing, Sudbury and Needham.

On April 25, two more devices were found in West Roxbury.

“We are immensely proud of the vigilance and dedication shown by our store teams in protecting our customers’ payment data,” said Roche Bros. CEO Kevin Barner in a statement.

“Implementing daily security inspections played a key role in quickly identifying the credit card skimmer in Wellesley.

“Additionally, our proactive protocols, including immediate dissemination of information to all stores, allowed for rapid detection of skimming devices in multiple locations on the same day,” said Barner.

Customers are always advised to check credit card statements and bank accounts for fraud after being alerted to a skimmer device.

Before using a credit card machine, if you notice that the device is damaged or loose, it may have a skimmer attached and you should not use it.

PREVIOUS SKIMMER DISCOVERIES

Roche Bros. has been hit by boils in the past.

In December 2023, credit card skimmers were found in five different stores.

What is a skimmer device?

A skimmer device is a fraudulent tool designed to steal sensitive credit or debit card information during transactions.

  • Imagine a skimmer device as a sneaky thief that hides in ATMs or card machines.
  • Its function is to secretly steal your credit or debit card information when you use it for a transaction.
  • These devices are like little spies that can copy your card details, including your card number and PIN, without you knowing.
  • Skimmers can be cleverly disguised to look like a regular card reader, making them difficult to detect.
  • Once they get your information, crooks can use it to make fake cards or buy things without your permission, causing a lot of trouble and stress.
  • It’s important to always be cautious and check card machines for anything unusual before using them to protect yourself from these sneaky devices.

The stores included Sudbury Farms in Sudbury, Sudbury Farms in Needham and Brothers Marketplace in Weston.

Roche Bros supermarkets were also part of the scam. in Wellesley and Natick – the same locations involved in the April 24 incidents.

“On December 24, 2023, an associate noticed an inconsistency in one of the self-checkout lanes at the Sudbury Farms, Sudbury store,” Roche Bros. said.

“Upon further investigation, two credit card skimmers were discovered at this location.

“Roche Bros Supermarkets. immediately took steps to secure all records at all stores, and upon further inspection over the holidays, credit card skimmers were found in ATMs at 4 more locations. The police were contacted.”

US Sun contacted Roche Bros. for comment and the Wellesley Police Department for an update.
