A NEW tiny home village in Colorado has opened, offering safe, rent-free space for those in need.

Experienced home builders in Colorado have teamed up with young builders to make a positive change in the community.
The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, a college and career readiness center, collaborated with the Colorado Village Collaborative, a nonprofit that creates tiny residential villages for the homeless, by Colorado Sentinel.
High school students in the CCIC program received hands-on construction training while working with nonprofit organizations.
Since October 2023, the duo has been working on building five tiny homes for Denver’s homeless community.
They are intended to be temporary emergency shelter spaces to help homeless people transition into stable housing.
On April 26, the months-long effort was completed and the newly constructed tiny homes were loaded onto semi-trucks to be delivered to their new community.
The 100 square foot tiny houses are suitable for one or two people and feature air conditioning, heating, bookshelves and lockable doors.
However, they were not built with bathrooms or kitchens because the small home village will feature a community center with a large kitchen, dining area, laundry room and bathrooms.
In recent years, students have built 21 small houses.
RESILIENT BUILDER
The small home village was built by dedicated individuals, including Joe Wehrman, one of CCIC’s students.
Losing an eye didn’t stop the high school student from participating in construction and wanting to help other people.
On July 4 last year, a fireworks mortar accidentally went off near him.
“I really don’t know what happened, but it hit me in the face,” Wehrman told the Colorado Sentinel.
Because of the accident, the boy broke his jaw and orbital bone and lost his right eye.
Furthermore, the cornea of his left eye was scratched, making vision difficult.
Wehrman began using a prosthetic eye and faced difficulties with his depth perception.

It made it difficult for him to do things like hammer a nail, but “like riding a bike, it comes back to you.”
Wehrman received a lot of support upon returning to CCIC and was able to continue his work learning about the construction industry.
“I couldn’t have done this without all the support I was given,” he said.
“It’s very comforting and gives you motivation because then… you don’t want to improve just for the sake of it. You make it better for everyone around you.
Fueled by the support of his teachers and friends, Wehrman was able to participate in the construction of his small home village.
“Tiny houses are cool… because I can help people and it’s helping me learn all the different skills and crafts that come with building a tiny house,” Wehrman said.
He hopes to one day own his own construction company and “be successful enough to be able to help people.”
