Many shoppers say they simply pass by receipt checkers.

While others share that they have certain quirks in their shopping experiences that allow them to bypass receipt checks.

“I’m at Walmart so often that all the greeters know me, I could walk out with a TV and they would just wave and say ‘have a nice day,’” one customer revealed on Facebook publish.

Other Walmart customers also commented on what they do when they leave.

“I always put the receipt up and keep walking,” said another.

“Like, you don’t HAVE to stop and buy them. You don’t pay to shop at Walmart. Now Sam’s Club and Costco are a different story,” one user wrote.

Many customers believe that at sister stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, showing your receipt is part of what you pay for.

However, those who shop at other retailers, including Walmart, Kroger and Target, don’t think they should be stopped.

‘VALUE OUR TIME’

Receipt checks continue to be a hot topic for customers sharing their shopping experiences on social media.

Another shopper posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the long lines at self-checkout and the need to show a receipt at checkout.

‘I never stop,’ says Walmart shopper after bypassing receipt checks with visual response that ‘makes workers furious’

“I browsed the aisles, looked through my items and bagged my purchases,” said Tommy T. tweetedapproaching several retailers.

“Still, on the way out, a receipt checker for everyone. I skipped the line after doing all of this – I held onto my receipt and kept walking.

“Trust us as self-service cashiers or bring the human touch back to the cash registers. We are not on your payroll, nor do we take staff discounts. Value our time or employ those who need these jobs.”

‘I DON’T COMPLY’

One customer says the intensity of the receipt check changed his relationship with Walmart greeters for the worse.

A Lawyer’s Top 5 Receipt Checking Tips

Los Angeles attorney Camron Dowlatshahi spoke with The US Sun about receipt checks and a customer’s rights and options when asked to show their receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it’s in the store, it’s completely legal. “Apparently there is nothing illegal about this. You are still on the company premises and the reason for doing this is to avoid theft”, confirms Dowlatshahi.
  2. However, if they’re kicking you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location is important,” he explained. “If you’re outside the store, you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of stealing and that you have to show the receipt, I think it’s a little bit of a different situation because now you’re in your way.”
  3. Although customers can say no to receipt checks, it can cause problems if you do so and the store suspects you of stealing. “You might say no, maybe it will create an unnecessary hassle for you because now you might have the police coming to your house and following up,” Dowlatshahi said.
  4. If you’re being blocked from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you may have legal action – but the store must have detained you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus to do it,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a client has been emotionally traumatized by being detained for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] process.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s a very simple thing to do. If you haven’t stolen anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

“In the past, the greeter would just say, ‘Hello, welcome to Walmart,’” the customer wrote.

“Now they serve a dual purpose as they randomly check people’s receipts as they leave.”

He explained how the greeting means nothing to him now because he now knows why the employee is talking to him.

The buyer also admitted that he refused receipt checks and simply said “Have a nice day” as he left.

“Personally, I don’t comply,” he said.

“It doesn’t have to be this way. I wish people would ask each other for help more often instead of stealing.”

Buyers have the right to refuse verification of the receipt, according to lawyers.

However, it may be more bothersome for them in the future if they do.
