A driver died after crashing a vehicle into a White House gate, authorities say.

The driver was found dead in the vehicle following the crash shortly before 10:30 pm on Saturday, the US Secret Service said in a statement.

They crashed into an outer perimeter gate of the White House complex while traveling “at high speed,” they added.

Security at the scene removed the driver from the vehicle and tried to help them, but they were already dead when they were found.

The Secret Service said security protocols were in place but there was no threat to the White House.

The D.C. Police Department said the driver, who has not yet been identified, was an adult male.

The Secret Service will continue to investigate the incident while the Washington Metropolitan Police Department investigates the “fatal portion of the accident,” the agency added.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s communications chief, tweeted shortly after midnight Sunday saying there were still limited traffic closures nearby while police and emergency services remained on scene.

He added that “there was no threat or implications for public safety.”
