One person died after falling from the stands to the ground during Sunday’s Ohio State University graduation ceremony in Columbus, school leaders said.
The incident was under investigation. The identity of the deceased was not available.
The ceremony at Ohio Stadium featured businessman Christopher Pan as the spring commencement speaker. A school spokesperson told NBC affiliate Colombo WCMH The death did not affect the day’s schedule of events, from noon to 3 p.m.
The ceremony took place during a spring fraught with controversy over pro-Palestinian protests and roiled by deadly tornado activity from the Midwest to the South.
Students at Ohio State University held several protests on campus criticizing Israel’s war in Gaza following Hamas’ surprise attack on the country on October 7. They have been widely characterized as peaceful.
