A visitor to the shelter was looking for another dog – then she met Cupid and immediately fell in love.
O woman adopted Cupidending the cub’s 198-day stay at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Northeastern North Carolina.
“The staff cried happy tears over this,” the shelter wrote May 4 on Facebook. “We can’t thank this amazing lady enough for giving her the home and chance she deserves!”
Cupid got a second chance months after arriving at the shelter. Approximately 200 days before her emotional adoption, she was rescued from a case of animal neglectsaid the SPCA when sharing photos of his recovery.
Although the shelter began caring for Cupid in late October, previous social media posts show that she only came up for adoption around Christmas time. This could explain why Cupid and the other rescue dogs – Blitzen, Comet, Dancer, Dasher, Donner, Prancer and Vixen – are named after characters from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
As of April, Cupid and several other dogs in the group had yet to be adopted, making them the oldest shelter residents. They have been described as “sweet” dogs who love toys.
At its adoption station, the shelter said Cupid arrived “weighing 24 pounds and leaves today weighing 42 pounds. She arrived with horrible skin, dull fur and missing hair. Today she comes out shining.”
Cupid began her next chapter after participating in “Cause for Paws,” a fundraiser on May 4 that featured pets in need of houses. She was not adopted at the event, leaving shelter workers “upset.”
But Cupid’s luck changed later that day. The woman who came to the shelter decided that the dog she originally wanted to see was not suitable. So the SPCA had her take a look at Cupid.
“It was love at first sight for both of them,” the animal organization wrote in its Facebook post, which received more than 300 reactions and more than a dozen congratulatory comments.
The SPCA did not immediately share additional details with McClatchy News on May 6. shelter is in Elizabeth Cityabout a 165-mile drive northeast of Raleigh.
