An 86-year-old Florida woman died in a freak traffic accident at her mailbox and it was her 87-year-old sister driving the car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The identities of the two sisters have not been released.
The accident happened around 4:30 pm on Monday, May 6, in a residential neighborhood in Port Richey, about a 40-mile drive northwest of Tampa.
“A Mercury sedan, driven by an 87-year-old Port Richey woman, was backing out of a private driveway…after dropping off her 86-year-old sister,” the highway patrol reports.
“The sister (aged 86) went to the mailbox to check the mail while the driver was leaving the garage. After exiting the garage, the driver changed gears to move forward and then accidentally stepped on the accelerator.”
The car swerved toward the mailbox, hitting his sister and continuing into a tree, authorities said. He only stopped after colliding with a Toyota Venza parked at his neighbor’s home on Elm Leaf Court, authorities said.
Investigators say the 86-year-old woman died at the scene.
