Who should be the face of North Carolina history? Tell us what you think.
The US Capitol has statues of two historical figures from each state. North Carolina’s current contributions are from two former governors, Zebulon Vance It is Charles Aycock.
But not by much. A statue of Billy Graham which will be revealed next week will replace that of Aycock, who campaigned for white supremacy in the 1890s.
Vance, whose statue will remain, enslaved people and served as a Confederate officer, The News & Observer previously reported.
The statues must be of famous North Carolinians who have died. As the law describes them:
“…statues, in marble or bronze, not exceeding two in number for each State, of deceased persons who were citizens of the same, and distinguished by their historical renown or by distinguished civic or military services, as each State may consider be worthy of this national celebration.”
