Who is Michael Cohen?

Michael Cohen, 53, was President Donald Trump’s lawyer from 2006 to 2018.

Cohen was vice president of the Trump Organization and a board member of the Eric Trump Foundation.

From 2017 to 2018 he was vice president of finance for the Republican National Committee.

Why did he go to prison?

Cohen was arrested for organizing payments to silence women who claimed they had affairs with President Trump and for lying to Congress in 2016.

His sentence resulted from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference.

Cohen said he violated campaign finance laws at Trump’s direction and “with the primary goal of influencing” the 2016 presidential election, according to the Washington Post.

In November 2018, Cohen entered a second guilty plea for lying to Congress about efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, CNN reported.

Upon pleading guilty to the charges, he was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay $50,000 for tax evasion and campaign violations.

Cohen began serving his sentence in May 2019 at a federal prison in Otisville, New York, but was placed on house arrest due to coronavirus concerns.

He was caught violating his license when he was caught dining at an Upper East Side restaurant in New York City.

In November 2021, Cohen was released from prison after completing his three-year term.

Speaking outside a New York federal court after his release, he said he wanted to work with authorities to “ensure that others are held accountable for their dirty deeds and that no one is considered above the law.”

“My release today in no way negates the actions I took at the direction and for the benefit of Donald J. Trump,” Cohen said.

“But it also does not deny the behavior of the Department of Justice, Bill Barr, the prosecutors of the Southern District of New York, Judge William H. Pauley the Third, or Donald himself, in my incarceration and initial prosecution.”

“I will continue to provide informative testimony documents and my full cooperation in all ongoing investigations,” he stated.

On March 30, 2023, Donald Trump was indicted on criminal charges by the New York grand jury.

What did he say about Trump in his memoir Disloyal?

In Cohen’s tell-all book, Disloyal, he revealed that Trump also committed tax fraud and lied to Melania to cover up his affairs with other women.

“From golden showers at a Las Vegas sex club, to tax fraud, to deals with corrupt officials in the former Soviet Union, to the capture and elimination of plots to silence Trump’s clandestine lovers, I was not just a witness to the president’s rise – I was an active and eager participant,” says Cohen.

Cohen’s legal counsel said a Manhattan federal court asked him to sign a document that would prohibit him from publishing a book during his sentence, according to The New York Times.

On July 2, Cohen tweeted: “Favorable decision from the Court yesterday, as I am close to finishing my book…”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is suing President Trump for wanting to stop him from releasing the book.

“We are suing the federal government for arresting Michael Cohen in retaliation for his plans to publish a book critical of Trump,” the ACLU announced on July 20.

“We will defend the First Amendment from government censorship – as we have for a century.”

In the book, written at Otisville Federal Prison, Cohen also admits that he “robbed” Trump’s business partners on his behalf.

He writes: “I stiffed contractors on his behalf, stole from his business partners, lied to his wife Melania to hide his sexual infidelities, and intimidated and yelled at anyone who threatened Trump’s path to power.”
