Ukraine warns it no longer has reserve troops amid Russia’s shock attack on Kharkhiv

UKRAINE’S generals have warned they have run out of reserves to stop Russia’s shock attack on Kharkiv.

They admit that they are fighting to contain the advance in the Northeast of the country.

General Kyrylo Budanov, head of Kiev’s military intelligence, said: “I used everything we had.

“Unfortunately, we have no one left on the reservations.”

Putin’s troops have conquered miles of ground in their fastest advances in months.

The blitz, considered the first stage of Russia’s summer offensive, is aimed at stretching Ukraine’s already outmatched defenders.

Kiev said Russian pressure appeared to have lost steam last night – but in the face of Putin’s 500,000-strong force, it warned that could change quickly.

Royal United Services Institute war expert Dr Jack Watling said that unless Ukraine managed to raise more troops, its prospects were bleak as Russia had “significant numerical superiority”.

Ukraine cannot bomb Russian forces massed just across the border because the US has banned it from using its weapons, such as Himars rockets, on enemy territory.

Former UK joint chief General Sir Richard Barrons said this allowed the Russians to “form at will”.

He added: “These are the only weapons that will dismember Russian forces as they organize for an offensive.”

But desperately needed weapons from the latest US aid package have started to reach the front lines.

Today in Kiev, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who promised to make Russia pay to rebuild his country.

He said: “It is what international law requires.”
