The notes he found in 2011 were stored inside a cardboard box, according to The Columbia Daily Tribune.

Jesse admitted that he considered keeping the money as it would help his family, but resisted.

He thought it was more important to keep his job.

He handed his discovery over to Josh Rackers, his manager-in-training at the time, who praised his actions.

“It shows he has everything it takes to work for this company – integrity, good morals,” Rackers added.

Rackers revealed that he was proud of Jesse for handing over the money.

“Not many people would have delivered this,” he said The Colombian Missourian.

Months later, a woman known only as Sharon gathered the money, according to The Tribune.

She initially called the store after the money was discovered.

But then it was discovered that more than $14,000 was found inside a box of Christmas decorations at a store in St. Louis.

I found an $8.70 jacket in a bin at Goodwill – the initials on the pocket revealed its famous owner and it’s now worth $25,000

Sharon then called Goodwill again about the money found in Columbia.

The funds were returned to her and she revealed that some of it would be donated to Goodwill.

Jesse didn’t take the money home – but he left with a check.

He received $100 from Goodwill.

Rules for finding money

The saying “discoverers, keepers

Although state and local laws may differ slightly, most will require you to try to find the owner of the money.

If you do not make reasonable efforts to locate the owner, many states may charge you with burglary or theft of lost property.

The penalty will likely be based on the value of the lost property, as larger finds that are kept without making reasonable efforts to find the owner may be classified as a felony rather than a misdemeanor.

The term reasonable efforts includes asking people nearby if they dropped any money, checking the envelope or wallet for an ID (if there is one), dropping it off at a nearby store, or contacting the police for a non-emergency line.

Some laws will authorize the police to return the money to the finder if no one claims it after a period of time.

Always check local and state laws, which will likely dictate what to do if you find property or money.

It is also advisable that you contact the police or a criminal defense lawyer who can help you understand what the law states and how you should proceed.
