What was Warren Glowatski’s role in Reena Virk’s murder?
On November 14, 1997, the life of 14-year-old Canadian teenager Reena Virk came to a brutal end.
On this fateful night, the 14-year-old went to a party near the Craigflower Bridge in Saanich, British Columbia.
While there, a group of teenagers, most under the influence of marijuana and alcohol, surrounded Reena.
Witnesses recalled the group, later dubbed “The Shoreline Six,” beating the teenager mercilessly.
They kicked, punched and slapped her, put cigarettes out on her face and body and tried to set her hair on fire.
Despite her injuries, Reena managed to escape them.
She was followed by a member of the group – Kelly Ellard – and Warren Glowatski, a 16-year-old teenager who, for unknown reasons, decided to get involved in the fight.
Both Ellard and Glowatski were later accused of holding Virk’s head underwater, essentially drowning her, although both denied the allegations.
The pair, however, managed to drag her to the other side of the bridge, where they allegedly continued to beat her before rolling her unconscious body into the water.
Eight days after Reener’s murder, his body was found on the beach in nearby George Inlet on November 22, 1997.
A coroner confirmed that she had drowned, although an autopsy also revealed that her head injuries were so severe that she likely would have died regardless of drowning.
What happened to Reena Virk’s killer Warren Glowatski?
Six teenagers, dubbed “The Shoreline Six”, along with Warren Glowatski, were found responsible for the murder of Reena Virk.
Between February 9 and 13, 1998, the six teenagers pleaded guilty and were convicted of assault causing bodily harm.
These girls, including Nicole Cook, Nicole Patterson, Miss Grace Pleich, Courtney Keith, Gail Ooms and Kelly Marie Ellard, were convicted between April and May 1998.
Five of the girls received sentences ranging from 60-day conditional sentences to up to a year in prison.
Glowatski, in turn, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
He was also sentenced with no chance of parole for seven years.
Kelly Ellard was convicted of second-degree murder on November 9, 2000.
She was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of full parole for five years.
Where is Warren Glowatski now?
On July 20, 2006, Glowatski received temporary unescorted passes from the National Parole Board.
He was officially released on parole on June 23, 2010.
What Glowatski does now or where is unknown – Ellard remains in prison.
Reena’s murder at the hands of Glowatski and Ellard is the focus of the Hulu miniseries Under the Bridge.
The show – which is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey – brings this shocking and brutal crime to the screen.
The objective is to clarify the murder of Reena Virk and the duo mainly responsible for her death, Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski.
