Scottie Scheffler, the best golfer in the world, accused of assaulting a police officer at the PGA Championship

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by police and charged with assault an official and other counts Friday outside the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, according to court documents.

Footage posted on X by ESPN’s Jeff Darlington appeared to show Scheffler being taken away by police officers.

The incident happened before the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, which was scheduled to begin at 7:15 am.

Jail records show he was booked on charges of second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to signal officers directing traffic.

Scheffler, who was released from prison and is now back at the club, said the incident resulted from a misunderstanding following a fatal accident on Friday outside the club.

“This morning, I was acting as instructed by the police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, which is understandable considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a huge misunderstanding about what I thought I was being asked to do,” he said. said in one declaration shared on X by the PGA Tour.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hoping to put that aside and focus on golf today,” she added.

The second round was initially postponed following a “serious accident close to the route” after police said a man was fatally struck by a bus at around 5am. The person’s identity has not been released, but the PGA of America said the person was a worker with one of its salespeople.

The round began after an hour and 20 minutes delay, the PGA of America said in an update.

“This is heartbreaking for all of us involved in the PGA Championship,” the organization said. “We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Scheffler also offered his condolences to the family and said “this really puts everything into perspective.”
