A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was involved in an “incident” today – triggering a huge rescue operation.
Raisi was traveling through Iran’s East Azerbaijan province on Sunday.
Iranian state media said the helicopter suffered a “hard landing”, without giving any further explanation.
According to state TV, the incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan, about 375 miles northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene but would have difficulty reaching the area because of heavy rain and winds.
The Iranian president’s condition is unclear, but Tasnim News said there is “hope” after his associates got in touch to report the incident.
Tasnim News said on Telegram: “Some of the president’s companions in this helicopter managed to contact the center and thus hope for an end to this incident without loss of life has been raised.”
The other two helicopters, carrying ministers and officials, landed safely at their destination.
Raisi was in Azerbaijan on Sunday morning to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The dam is the third that the two nations have built on the Aras River.
