WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee said Monday they raised more than $51 million in April, falling well short of the $76 million Donald Trump and the Republican Party reported raising in the month.

Biden’s re-election campaign said it had $192 million in cash on hand at the end of last month, an amount it said was more than any Democratic candidate in history. But that amount was also roughly the same as what she reported having at the end of the first quarter of the year, on March 30 — suggesting the campaign was spending funds as quickly as it raised them.

April’s totals were also down sharply from March, when the president’s campaign and the DNC announced raising more than $90 million.

Biden and his party had routinely outperformed his predecessor, but Trump’s April fundraising was boosted by a record $50.5 million his campaign reported raising during a single donor event earlier in the month in Palm Beach, Florida. , home of billionaire investor John. Paulson.

That meeting was Trump’s response to a March event with former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, where Biden’s campaign reported raising $26 million. Meanwhile, next month, Biden’s campaign is planning a major fundraiser in Los Angeles featuring Hollywood stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Trump and the Republican Party reported raising more than $65.6 million in March and ended the month with $93.1 million in cash on hand.

Biden’s campaign says a large war chest has allowed it to run large ad campaigns in key states and work with the DNC and state parties to better mobilize potential supporters ahead of the November elections — far outpacing efforts on the ground. Trump.

Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said the April campaign “is giving us the resources we need to invest in opening offices, hiring organizers and communicating in our swing states in order to mobilize the coalition of voters who will decide this election.”

The president’s team says it now has more than 150 offices coordinated with Democratic officials and more than 500 staff coordinated in swing states.

Trump and the Republicans racked up big fundraising leads early in the 2020 cycle, only to lose the election, however, and polls show Biden continues to face low approval ratings as most voters say they prefer not see a rematch in 2020.

Still, Trump’s personal finances have recently been hit by legal fees amid his allegations in four criminal cases, including the ongoing investigation involving hush money payments to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels.

The Biden campaign said Monday night that April was the strongest month for repeat donors to date, with those donors contributing more than $5.5 million during the month alone. He stated that more than 225,000 donors committed to donating every month, which, according to him, was more than 1.5 times the amount at this point in the 2020 cycle.

Since Biden announced his candidacy for re-election in April 2023, his team says that 96% of all his donations have been less than $200 and that 1.8 million donors have made almost 4.9 million contributions.
