Former President Donald Trump signaled during a new interview that he is open to some restrictions on birth control, saying he will soon release a policy on the issue.

In an interview with political analyst Jon Delano of KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, Trump was asked whether he supported any restrictions on a person’s right to contraception.

“We are looking at this and I will have a policy on this very soon and I think it is something you will find interesting,” Trump said. “I think it’s a smart decision. We’ll be releasing it very soon.”

Asked if that means he might want to support some restrictions, Trump said: “You also know, things really have a lot to do with the states and some states will have different policies than others.”

The Biden-Harris presidential campaign posted clips from the TV interview on Xand spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said in a statement: “Women across the country are already suffering from the post-Roe nightmare, and if he wins a second term, it’s clear he wants to go even further by restricting access to birth control and emergency contraceptives.”

She added: “It is not enough for Trump that women’s lives are being put at risk, doctors are being threatened with prison time and extreme bans are being enacted with no exceptions for rape or incest. He wants to destroy our freedom of access at birth.” control too”

Contacted for comment on Tuesday, a Trump campaign official said that in the same interview, Trump said he would “make his announcement on mifepristone in the near future,” referring to one of the two drugs used for abortions. medicinal products, whose fate is currently in the hands of the Supreme Court. He also stated that “President Trump has never advocated restrictions on contraceptives.”

While it appears that Trump himself has not advocated restrictions on birth control, his administration has imposed some limits on access to contraception. For example, the Trump administration issued a regulation to expand the types of employers who can remove birth control coverage based on religious or moral objections. The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that this regulation could remain.

In Tuesday’s interview, Trump also applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. Wade in 1973, which became reality after his conservative appointments to the high court bench.
