SHOPPERS are increasingly fed up with big corporations’ anti-theft measures in stores.

One of the biggest complaints from consumers across the country is Walmart’s receipt verification policy, which was created in an effort to combat rising levels of theft since the pandemic, according to the chain.

But even though Walmart blames the rise in store theft for hurting its bottom line, it projects to consume about $132 billion combined in theft losses this year, according to to look for by Capital One, its profits reached record levels at the same time.

Later this month, Walmart reported a quarterly profit of US$5.1 billion.

That’s triple the amount of money they made during the same quarter just a year earlier.

But even with record margins, Walmart’s retail layoffs increased by more than 3,225% last year — leaving many customers to wonder if self-checkout was still an option in their area, or have to wait in queues accumulated for a long time. periods, regardless of item count.

This created a very uncomfortable feeling for shoppers across the country about the treatment they face when they simply try to purchase everyday items.

“Thanks Walmart for bothering me to show my receipt because you don’t want to pay the cashiers,” he said a client, Brian Kester, at X, formerly Twitter.

“Now because your camera didn’t like how I put my corn in a bag, I now have to deal with another worker coming in and accusing me of stealing and checking everything in my cart,” his post continued, “get better.”

Others say they feel treated like potential criminals rather than customers.

Legal experts said buyers have the right to refuse receipt checks as they have not contractually agreed to be bound by them at the time of purchase.

Tips for Verifying a Lawyer’s Receipt

Alex Colangelo, a lawyer and business professor, says no matter what state you’re in, non-member stores have no legal power to stop buyers who don’t comply, The US Sun previously reported.

Unlike clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco, where customers have to agree to receipt checks when signing up, shoppers are not legally required to show receipts at regular retailers.

“So you are required to show your receipt when leaving Walmart, next time someone asks you in California, show them the law,” he wrote a buyer on X.

From him Posts comes with a screenshot of California lawwhich states that the state’s customers are not legally required to comply with receipt checks.

“No, you don’t have to show your receipt at Walmart,” attorneys for The Law of the Hive confirmed.

“Receptionists will ask you to see your receipt when you leave,” but lawyers say what they are really asking for is “permission to search your cart.”

But that doesn’t mean buyers can’t get in trouble for refusing to comply.

While customers may not be required to show their receipts, “you may want to do so anyway,” says attorney Amy Loftsgordon.

If an employee suspects a customer of stealing by refusing to show the receipt when asked, the store then has probable cause to detain that customer until the police arrive, even if the employee has done nothing wrong.

William Montgomery, a Walmart customer from Denver, Colorado, refused to show his receipt to employees when asked.

He was then detained by the store and eventually released.

But Montgomery tried to sue Walmart for false imprisonment, but ended up losing the case.

Judge Matthew D. Grove, who presided over the case, ruled that Walmart has retailer privilege in this case – a provision in Colorado law that protects stores and their employees from any liability if they had “reasonable grounds” to detain and question any customer they suspect of stealing.

But regardless of the potential consequences they may face, some customers simply refuse to comply with the new policy.

“NO. You can never check my receipt,” he wrote Chris Barnett in X.

“After I pay $250 for groceries at self-checkout because none of the registers are open, don’t bother me asking to see my receipt.”

A Lawyer’s Top 5 Receipt Checking Tips

Los Angeles attorney Camron Dowlatshahi spoke with The US Sun about receipt checks and a customer’s rights and options when asked to show their receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it’s in the store, it’s completely legal. “Apparently there is nothing illegal about this. You are still on the company premises and the reason for doing this is to avoid theft”, confirms Dowlatshahi.
  2. However, if they’re kicking you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location is important,” he explained. “If you’re outside the store, you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of stealing and that you have to show the receipt, I think it’s a little bit of a different situation because now you’re in your way.”
  3. Although customers can say no to receipt checks, it can cause problems if you do so and the store suspects you of stealing. “You might say no, maybe it will create an unnecessary hassle for you because now you might have the police coming to your house and following up,” Dowlatshahi said.
  4. If you’re being blocked from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you may have legal action – but the store must have detained you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus to do it,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a client has been emotionally traumatized by being detained for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] process.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s a very simple thing to do. If you haven’t stolen anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.
