Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died at the age of 30, the PGA Tour reported.

The American, a two-time Tour winner and world No. 58, withdrew at the end of his second round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, citing illness.

“We were devastated to learn, and heartbroken to share, that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am speechless,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan.

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Monahan said he had spoken to Murray’s parents to offer his condolences and asked for the tournament to go ahead.

“They were convinced that Grayson would want us to do it,” he said. “As difficult as it may be, we want to respect his wishes.”

Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental issues in the past, made a big turnaround this year and won the Sony Open in Honolulu in January, ending a six-year winless drought, hitting a 3-foot corner for birdie. on the last hole. get to a playoff and win it with a 40-foot putt.

“Yeah, my parents have been through, you know, hell and back and forth basically for the last six years and I struggled with some mental issues,” Murray said at the time.

“It’s not easy for me, and the people around me who love me don’t like to see me down. They have been my number one supporters. There are also some friends who have been there and that makes these moments that much more special.”

He won his first PGA Tour title, the Barbasol Championship, in 2017.

His management company, GSE Worldwide, said in a statement: “We will wait to comment until we know more details, but our hearts ache for his family, his friends and everyone who loved him during this very difficult time.”

Murray, from Raleigh, North Carolina, was a three-time winner of the Callaway Junior Championships and played the US Open for the first time in 2013 as an amateur.

His best finish in a major was a tie for 22nd at the 2017 PGA Championship.
