The famous house used when Kevin McCallister was left home alone at Christmas is for sale.

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom mansion in Winnetka, Illinois, has been put up for sale for a staggering $5.25 million (£4.1 million).

It is the first time since 2012 that the property has come on the market, according to the American real estate agency Zillow.

Since the release of the classic 1990 film directed by Chris Columbus, the house has undergone extreme renovations.

Posting a tour of the interiors, estate agents The Dawn Mckenna Group said the current owners doubled the living space with the addition of a large conservatory and built a state-of-the-art basketball court.

The house, described by the company as “one of the most famous in the world”, also has two living rooms, a large kitchen, a garage for three cars and the “unforgettable staircase” that 10-year-old Macaulay Culkin climbed. He went down on a sleigh.

Previously, Home Alone fans had the chance to stay at the house in 2021, when Airbnb listed the property for an exclusive one-night stay.

Similar properties that have appeared in movies or television have also achieved eye-watering prices when put up for sale.

In February this year, the music legend’s west London home Freddie Mercury went on sale for bids in excess of £30 million.

While the house of the beloved horror movie Halloween went on the market for $1.8 million (£1.4 million) in 2021 and in 2020, the famous lock keepers’ cottages where the Channel 4 program is broadcast Great breakfast was based had an asking price of £5.75 million.
