Why is everyone posting All eyes on Rafah?

A social media post in response to the conflict between Israel and Gaza had more than 34 million shares on Instagram in 24 hours.

The pro-Palestinian image depicts tents in a camp organized to spell “All Eyes on Rafah.”

It refers to a refugee camp in the southern region of Gaza that lost at least 45 people following an Israeli airstrike on May 26, 2024.

The attack hit an area housing displaced Palestinians, setting their tents on fire, according to Palestinian doctors.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack a “tragic mistake”, while an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said much of the destruction was caused by a subsequent fire that could not have been triggered only by the type of ammunition used.

The slogan “All eyes on Rafah” reportedly originated from a statement by Rick Peeperkorn, director of the World Health Office of the Organization of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

He made the comment in February 2024, shortly after Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an evacuation plan for Rafah.

On social media, the hashtag #AllEyesOnRafah has garnered over 1,95,000 posts with millions of views (as of May 29, 2024)

It also trended on Instagram, with nearly 1,00,000 additional posts on the platform.
