IN WHAT could be described as scenes straight out of an apocalypse, the sky above a Chinese city has turned blood red, sparking fears of earthquakes among residents.
The red blood sky shocked residents last Thursday, when the sky changed color in Dinghai District, Zhoushan City, located in China’s Zhejiang Province, at approximately 8 p.m.
An unidentified woman who took the footage said after sharing the video online: “I heard it was the lights of fishing boats, but this is the first time I’ve seen it.”
Online commentators like Matador said: “It looks like a nuclear explosion.”
And user “Dreams Follow Your Heart” commented: “Why does it look a bit like the glow of an artificial sun?”
While user Dylan Chang added: “I can’t believe this.”
An unidentified Douyin user said, “Before earthquakes, the sky is always red.”
Similar events reportedly occurred in the city’s Putuo district on May 7, 2022, and in Fuzhou, Fujian province on May 10, 2022.
After the images went viral, the Dinghai District Meteorological Department denied that the supernatural was behind the phenomenon and confirmed that it was mainly caused by the red lights used by local fishing boats.
They said, “It’s similar to the situation in 2022.”
An expert from the Space Physics Research Team at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) analyzed the video.
He said: “Because the lights on ocean-going fishing boats are red, red light has a longer wavelength and strong penetration power.
“At the same time, under the scattering effect of liquid droplets in the atmosphere, the red light will be scattered to a more distant range, thus presenting an abnormally strong red light phenomenon in the sky.”
It comes a month after Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, was plunged into darkness when severe storms brought torrential rain and heavy clouds.
City authorities decided to turn off the street lights as the strong storm left everything as dark as the night of April 29th.
An eyewitness, Mr. Xiao, witnessed the dark day while receiving an order on Shaoshan South Road in Tianxin District.
He said the rain was very heavy because of the dark clouds, but he actually ended up getting to the delivery point faster than normal because he didn’t stop to get out of the rain and prevent the food from spoiling.
He said: “The rain was very heavy. I didn’t stop to take shelter.”
What causes the sky to change color?

The COLOR of the sky depends on several factors.
Most of the time during the day the sky appears blue.
But it also turns orange during sunrise and sunset.
The change in the color of the sky results from a phenomenon called scattering: molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays, causing them to scatter.
Dispersion affects the color of light coming from the sky, according to ScienceDaily.
But the details are determined by the wavelength of the light and the size of the particle.
