President Joe Biden’s campaign declared “no one is above the law” just minutes after former President Donald Trump was sentenced on Thursday in a New York court.

“Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed that he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his own personal gain,” Biden campaign spokesman Michael Tyler said in a statement. “But today’s verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality.”

The president is not expected to have separate news to address the verdict, according to a person with knowledge of his plans. But Biden may end up answering a question on the subject at another time in the future, when he is already in front of reporters.

“We respect the rule of law and have no additional comment,” said Ian Sams, a spokesman for the White House counsel’s office.

At the same time, Biden the campaign highlighted the message released last week: that voters must wake up to the possibilities of another Trump term. This means, says the campaign, getting supporters involved in Democratic campaigns and fundraising to stop Trump in November – and make them stop waiting for Trump somehow leave because of the countless trials he faces.

“There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the polls. Convicted criminal or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president,” Tyler continued.

“The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater. He is waging an increasingly unbalanced campaign of revenge and retribution, promising to be a dictator ‘from day one’ and calling for our Constitution to be ‘terminated’ so he can regain and maintain power,” Tyler said. “One second Trump’s term means chaos, destroying Americans’ freedoms and fomenting political violence – and the American people will reject him in November.”
