SHOPPERS have closed their local supermarket after it got rid of self-checkout due to a huge profit problem.
Pick ‘n Save customers in Milwaukee believe shopping in the store will be much more difficult now that self-checkout is gone.
“I don’t normally shop for a family. I just have a few things I want to buy,” buyer Rob Wiese told local ABC affiliate WISN.
“It’s a shame they’re closing it.”
Another shopper added that this will make going to the store much longer.
“It added about 10 minutes to my shopping trip that I’d rather spend doing something else,” said shopper Chris Fabbri.
Pick ‘n Save announced that this change was intended to help with the customer experience.
“At Pick ‘n Save, we are always looking for ways to improve the customer and associate experience and ensure a smooth and friendly checkout,” said a Pick ‘n Save spokesperson.
“We are implementing a self-checkout-free pilot at select stores in Wisconsin. We anticipate this change will help us better meet the needs of our customers.”
However, other experts believe this could be due to unintentional theft.
“This raises some challenges, but one of them is this funny little notion called partial shrinkage, which occurs when a shopper, perhaps unintentionally or intentionally, doesn’t scan every item in their order,” said Dominick Reuter, a senior reporter at Business Insider .
“So some things go out the door without being paid for.”
The supermarket did not comment on whether they would add this change to other stores.
