The ensuing investigation launched a high-speed police chase of OJ Simpson and his subsequent murder trial and acquittal, dubbed the “trial of the century.”

While notorious pop culture images like O.J.’s Ford Bronco and the infamous saying “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” are much of what comes to mind when people think of Nicole and Ron’s murder, Lifetime’s new documentary , Nicole Brown Simpson’s The Life and Murder sheds an entirely new and comprehensive light on the tragedy.

In the film, Nicole’s sisters, Denise, Dominique and Tanya Brown, give exclusive interviews and reveal their dangerous relationship.

Denise shared that she didn’t notice the signs of abuse because, looking forward, OJ and Nicole seemed “very loving towards each other.”

Nicole’s diary entries during their relationship show the multifaceted abuse she suffered at the hands of OJ before his murder.

REGISTRATION BEGINS

The first entry documenting the horrific treatment dates back to 1977, following the death of OJ’s one-year-old daughter, Aaren, from his first marriage.

“Early freshman year 1977 in San Francisco, after her baby died, I found an earring in my bed in Bedford,” Nicole wrote.

“I accused OJ of sleeping with someone named Teri. He went on the attack, chased me, grabbed me and threw me against the walls. I threw all my clothes out the window into the street [from] 3rd floor. She hurt me and calmed him down.

Another entry is from the time at the family beach house in Laguna.

“Beach house – He hit me, threw me against the wall. I threw my camera, it broke the panels – frames of the master bedroom doors and the garage door,” Nicole wrote.

A Browns family friend, Judie Manto, described her time at the Laguna beach house, observing a disturbing volatility in the home environment because of O.J.’s mood.

Manto described positive, electric energy in the house, until OJ arrived.

“[OJ] it would just come and be like a black cloud all of a sudden.”

CHRISTMAS CATASTROPHE

Another entry details the beginning of another OJ abuse case after Nicole allowed a gay man near her son.

The entire family gathered at a restaurant in Hawaii for Christmas in 1988; Denise recalled the incident.

The first entry detailed an incident that occurred in 1977 and went on to describe the horrific abuse that lasted for years.

“There was a gay couple sitting at the table and they just thought Justin was beautiful,” Denise said.

“One of the guys kissed Justin on the forehead. And it was so sweet and pleasant, and as soon as we left all hell broke loose.”

This “hell” was described in more detail by OJ’s close friend Marcus Allen in a 1996 deposition tape.

“After Nicole let the man hold the baby, she took the baby back, OJ allegedly said, ‘Why did you make that gay guy hold my baby’ or something like that,” Allen said.

It was the combination of Nicole allowing a gay man access to her son and her subsequent rebuttal that triggered OJ’s violent and abusive response.

“And she said, ‘Why are you worried about him being gay? His father is gay.’ And OJ was very upset with her,” Allen recalled.

OJ’s relationship with his father, Jimmy Simpson, was fraught with turbulence, especially after the elder Simpson came out as gay later in his life, later passing away from AIDS.

An entry in Nicole’s diary described OJ’s reaction behind closed doors following their verbal altercation between friends and family.

“Hawaii gay man kissed Justin. OJ threw me against the walls of our hotel and onto the floor. Put bruises on my arms and back,” she wrote.

She went on to explain how she feared for her life during that explosion.

“The window scared me – I thought he was going to kick me out,” Nicole wrote.

Denise remembered the next day and Nicole hiding the injuries left by OJ.

“I knew he was upset, but I didn’t know anything else that happened behind closed doors,” she said.

“After that, I read in her diary that he put her against the wall, on the porch, doing what he always did – hurting her,” she reflected.

A STORY OF ABUSE

The cops in the documentary detailed how OJ also abused his first wife, Marguerite Whitley.

The two were married for just over a decade, having three children together, before divorcing in 1979, two years after OJ started seeing Nicole.

During the marriage, and at the time of OJ’s growing football fame, reports of domestic violence circulated, with both parties denying the allegations.

Terry Shauer, a now-retired Los Angeles police officer, recalled hearing a call involving Marguerite and O.J.

“We were greeted at the door by a woman,” said Shauer

“She had a fight with her husband and during the argument he became violent with her, hit her and, as I remember, pulled out some of her hair.

“My memory is that there was a clump of hair on the floor at the entrance to the house.”

He went on to describe how his children were present at the fight and how Marguerite was hesitant to speak to him and his partner.

“The kids were there. You know, just being kids and kind of standing around and looking really upset, that’s what I remember,” Shauer said.

“She was upset. He had left the scene. We talked to her briefly and kind of got the story we could, but she didn’t really want to go into too much detail about it. She just wanted to get out of the house.”

Marguerite allegedly refused to report the incident or sign the police report telling Sauer, “My husband is OJ Simpson, the football player.”

OJ Simpson looked frail and unrecognizable when he was photographed before his death.

Simpson died of prostate cancer on April 10, according to his family.

His diagnosis came to light in February, but he said at the time that he was still in good health.

However, on January 22, 2024, Simpson looked worn out while walking in Las Vegas.

The controversial NFL star was seen walking with a cane while wearing a cap and tracksuit.

Although Simpson was said to be under hospice care, he stated that he was in good health in February.
