AT LEAST one pilot died in a terrible mid-air collision at an air show in Portugal.
Two small planes crashed during the Beja Air Show, in front of hundreds of horrified spectators, as harrowing footage captured the moment the plane crashed to the ground.
Five other aerobatic planes were involved in the aerobatic accident, the Air Force said.
They announced: “The Air Force regrets to inform that at 16:05 (15:05 GMT), at the Beja Air Show, two planes were victims of an accident during an aerial demonstration”.
The event was quickly canceled after the accident when more than 30 emergency vehicles rushed to the airfield.
The Public Security Police began investigating the accident together with the Public Ministry and the Aviation and Railway Accident Prevention and Investigation Office.
Haunting footage captured the moment the group of planes flew through the sky in formation before one lost control and flew into the other five.
After hitting an aircraft, it continued to fly upwards before beginning to fall towards the ground.
Horrified onlookers can be heard screaming “oh no, oh no” before a giant fireball erupts as it hits the ground.
The stricken plane can also be seen falling towards the ground, but is believed to have successfully avoided disaster.
