US President Joe Biden has said he has “boundless love” for his son Hunter as jury selection in his federal gun case began on Monday.

The questions they were asked ranged from their knowledge of the case, their thoughts on gun ownership, and whether they or anyone close to them has struggled with substance abuse or addiction, or if they have ever owned a gun.

Hunter Biden also faces a separate trial in California in September for failing to pay $1.4 million (£1.1 million) in taxes.

Campaign distraction

Joe BIden’s allies are concerned that the trial could become a distraction as the presidential election campaign progresses.

Prosecutors hope to show that Hunter Biden was mired in addiction when he purchased the gun and therefore lied on the forms.

They have said they plan to use his published memoirs as evidence, and may also present contents of a laptop he left at a Delaware repair shop and never recovered.

The highly personal content reached Republicans in 2020 and was publicly leaked to cause maximum embarrassment to the Biden camp.

The case against Hunter Biden dates back to a period when he was addicted to crack cocaine.
