We all thought tight end Travis Kelce was telling a joke on Friday when he addressed the nation during the Chiefs’ visit to the White House.

“My fellow Americans, it is a pleasure to see you all again,” said Kelce. “I’m not going to lie, President Biden, they told me if I came here I would get shocked, so I’m going back to my seat.”

Funny stuff, right?

Well… on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce said that the Secret Service really had warned him before that moment.

When the Chiefs visited the White House in 2023, Kelce tried to get a word out of the podium while President Joe Biden’s back was turned. And before that trip to Washington D.C., Kelce said your driver’s license expired three years ago earlier and he had to buy a new one. He even joked about bringing a fake ID.

All this did not please the Secret Service.

“This is real. The Secret Service that’s all over the White House wasn’t very happy with me,” Kelce said. “They weren’t very happy with me on my second visit. And not just for (taking the podium in 2023), but by all sorts, remember I was talking about how I had an expired ID and got into the White House? Yeah, no, I got (shit) for that and I made sure of that beforehand, because of what. It happened last time and because of how embarrassed I was about going to the White House with an expired ID, I made sure to bring my passport this time so it would show that I was a citizen in Missouri.

“And yes, I was official and legitimate, and I was doing things the right way because everyone has to do that in the White House. And when I walked in, about four or five Secret Service members came up to me and told me, ‘You know, if you come up to the podium, we’re authorized to shock you.'”

Kelce, by the way, now lives in Kansas. But I assume your Missouri license hasn’t expired.

After the, um, conversation with the Secret Service, Kelce had no plans to take the podium. It was an unexpected moment from President Biden.

“So all of this was going through my head. I had no idea that President Biden was going to ask me to come up and give me a moment,” Kelce said. “I had no idea. He walks up and the first thing he says is give me the floor. And I felt a Taser pointed at me when I was there the whole time. That’s why I was there (saying to myself): ‘ Don’t make quick movements. Stay calm.'”

A special moment

Kelce talked about what an honor it was to go to the White House with the Chiefs, who received the invitation to win Super Bowl LVIII.

“That was fun. It’s always an honor to go to the White House, man,” Kelce said. “I kind of mentioned this last time: whenever I get a chance to be recognized by the President of the United States and go with my teammates and a group of men and women that I’ve been successful with to the point where we’ve managed to be recognized , man, I’m doing this every time, no matter who’s in charge. It doesn’t matter what is happening in this world.

“I think it’s a really cool opportunity. I think representing the Chiefs there, I wanted to do it for the Hunt family and all of our coaches that were going. I wanted to make sure I remembered that and took all those photos and memories to the bank with them.”
