A VIRAL video captured a man casually packing a cart full of items without scanning any of them.
The act looked like he was orchestrating a daring robbery at Walmart and left onlookers shocked.
Walmart has been cracking down on anti-theft measures recently, with receipt checks adding an extra shock factor.
The video was posted by a user of X, formerly Twitter, Crime Net (@triggerhappyv1) on Monday.
“Man doesn’t scan a single item at Walmart,” the caption read. the video he said.
The surprising act attracted a lot of attention with millions of views.
There was also a mixed response regarding the alleged theft in the responses.
“There goes my hero,” said one user.
“I don’t see any crime committed,” said another user.
An angry Walmart shopper responded to the video and suggested this could be avoided with more checkouts.
“They should cancel these self-checkout things and add more cashiers. I wish more co-workers and more customers would talk,” they said.
Another who responded insisted that the act was not a good idea because there would be no way to avoid being caught on camera.
“Wait until you guys find out there are cameras on these things and they will wait until you reach a super illegal amount so they can arrest you,” they responded.
CHECK AND GO
The video may also have been misleading, a former Walmart employee said in response.
There is an option to use Scan & Go at some Walmarts where it is normal to bag items without scanning each item.
“Former Walmart employee here, he’s not stealing. He used Scan & Go”, explained the user.
“Look at the screen. It’s a feature where you scan items with your phone while shopping and then pay with the app. He purchased the items.
Another user also noticed and said, “You can scan and pay for things with your phone while shopping at Walmart.”
Latest self-checkout changes
Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.
Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.
Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.
While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the upgrades, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.
One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.
However, this test has been discontinued.
At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.
Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.
In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.
Walmart describes Scan & Go as a timely feature for its customers.
“Shop and checkout with your phone in store,” Walmart said explaining Scan & Go in its website.
“It will save you time and is contact-free.
“Just scan, pay and be on your way!”
Shoppers have the freedom to purchase as many items as they need, without limit, using Scan & Go.
