A WALMART shopper has reported an employee who accused her of theft, but she is aware of her rights.
The Walmart employee demanded a receipt without proof of theft, which is essential when you’re not in an affiliated store.
The incident was shared by an X user, formerly Twitter, Agua (@oneeof1tony).
“A lady at Walmart thought I was stealing,” user he said.
“She literally went through my bag and checked the receipt.
“Like this isn’t Costco.”
A customer service account called Walmart Help responded to the tweet to try to resolve the issue.
“Can you tell us more about your experience in a DM?” Walmart Help said.
“We would like to work to resolve your concerns.”
Receipt checks can only be performed if there is reasonable cause to believe that theft has occurred.
Otherwise, customers may deny receipt verification when leaving stores.
However, denying receipt may cause problems with a specific store.
MEMBERSHIP CHAINS
Costco can impose receipt checks because people sign a membership agreement that includes a waiver of liability on them.
The wholesale retailer uses receipt checks to ensure customers are not overcharged and to protect its inventory.
“We do this to verify that items purchased were processed correctly by our cashiers,” Costco said in its statement. website.
“It is our most effective method of maintaining accurate inventory control.
“And it’s also a good way to ensure our members are charged appropriately for their purchases.”
People shopping through Walmart’s membership network, Sam’s Club, will have a similar experience with pickup checks.
Sam’s Club may also impose receipt checks on its members.
Receipt verification is done “to ensure you are charged correctly for the merchandise you select,” Sam’s Club said on its website.
“Sam’s Club may electronically inspect or scan your merchandise and electronic/telephone or paper receipts when you leave any Sam’s Club location.”
