A BELOVED father and husband were victims of a fatal shooting when a gunman randomly went on a rampage while passing cars while on the street.
Victor Hugo Leon, 42, was returning home from a night shift in San Jacinto, California, 85 miles east of Los Angeles, and was just minutes from his home when he was shot on Monday.
The shooter, Julio Rodarte, 39, opened fire on several vehicles while walking in broad daylight, TMZ reported on Thursday.
The incident occurred during the morning commute, resulting in two people being shot and several cars being struck by bullets.
The other victim was taken to the hospital and is doing well.
Surveillance video captured Rodarte discharging a semiautomatic weapon into vehicles, reloading and continuing to fire.
Rodarte was arrested and booked on one count of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the shooting.
SAD LOSS
Leon was the father of four children and husband to his wife, Griselda Zepeda, of 13 years.
A representative for California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the incident and highlighted ongoing gun safety efforts.
“This is a horrific and senseless incident, and yet another reminder of the heavy toll of the gun violence epidemic.”
Enrique Tores, owner of E&E Tires, located near where the shooting occurred, said he heard 30 shots fired.
“It’s so sad, you know, really sad,” Tores told the ABC affiliate CABC.
“In the back there were 5 or 6 people working, you know.
“And I was scared he was going to get into my business and start shooting people.”
Rodarte reportedly first stopped at a local grocery store, trying to buy a shot of alcohol, but without the funds, according to KABC.
After leaving the store, he allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting.
Witnesses say he dropped the gun before taking off all his clothes.
“He was completely naked and continued walking down the street,” Tores said.
“That’s when they called the police.”
‘HOLE IN OUR HEARTS’
A GoFundMe was created for the Leon family and has received enormous support.
The original goal was to raise $20,000, but as of Thursday night it was at $58,000.
