Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan fell last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
New claims for unemployment benefits, an indicator of layoffs, fell to 4,606 in the week ending June 1, down from 7,348 the previous week, the Labor Department said.
U.S. unemployment claims rose to 229,000 last week, an increase of 8,000 claims from the previous week’s 221,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
North Dakota saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 164.7%. Puerto Rico, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims falling 43.6%.
