TINY landlords are in complete panic after being told they will need to evict their properties within weeks.

Residents of the Rivercrest Village Mobile Home Park in Wisconsin say they have been “kept in the dark” amid violent disputes between the rental property and the city of La Crosse.

The latter appears poised to terminate its lease with Nicolai Apartments and Rivercrest, LLC on land it owns at the end of Rivercrest Drive, La Crosse Tribune reported.

The two have been doing business together since 1997.

La Crosse believes the land in question was misused and should be uprooted for public works maintenance.

If there is no agreement by the last day of June, tenants living there will be evicted.

From 1997 to 2021, the property’s annual rental rate has ranged from $2,380 to $3,890.

The annual rent is currently $5,000.

Rivercrest Village officials say they are optimistic about maintaining the properties and have argued that the renovations are not necessary.

“We really thought there would be a solution to this. Frankly, we can’t understand the city’s response,” said Jay Hoeschler, leasing agent at Rivercrest Village.

“We were talking about renting at that point and they said, ‘We’re not even going to rent to you. We will not sell or rent to you; we’re going to ask you to evict these people.’”

Residents Virginia Kreyer and her husband Rick say they are concerned about the ongoing tensions.

‘They took everything I had’ Veteran left living in car after being evicted from his own home over sale of ‘cash rich, poor house’

Like other locals on fixed-income salaries, they fear rising moving costs will bring them to their knees financially.

“There is enormous uncertainty. Since this started, Rick and I have been getting rid of stuff for everyone in town,” she said.

“We’re not ready to go to the grocery store and find a fix or find somewhere to do with all your stuff.”

Fellow resident Iidiko Erdos has made an impassioned plea as struggling tenants face the prospect of eviction.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A LETDOWN

If you’re facing eviction after falling behind on rent, help is available. Many tenant rights vary by state, but some are protected by federal law.

How to respond to an eviction notice depends on your circumstances, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

If you have NOT yet received an eviction notice:

  • Look for options for help with rent costs
  • Talk to your landlord about making a repayment plan
  • Research local tenant protections against eviction

If you have received an eviction notice or if a court has already ruled that you may be evicted:

  • Consider hiring a lawyer; Many people are unfairly evicted before necessary, experts say
  • Find help from local organizations for help and support
  • Ask the court about your right to stay the eviction
  • File a response with the court explaining why you should not be evicted
  • Request emergency rental assistance from local or federal sources

“Please have compassion for these residents,” she said Monday afternoon during a La Crosse Plan Commission hearing.

“We are human beings, we have lives and we don’t deserve any of this.”

A final request for a lease extension would postpone the eviction date to at least June 30, 2025, and “open negotiations” for long-term solutions.

The US Sun reported on several evictions, including another woman who was threatened with eviction from their small home village.

She was among 30 campers under threat of eviction from the Webster Family Campground, about 20 minutes south of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Thornhill did not respond to the outlet, which attempted to contact the company several times for comment.
