Busy downtown Atlanta intersection near BeltLine closed for construction this week

A busy intersection near Piedmont Park in downtown Atlanta will be closed for the next few days.

Atlanta Beltline, Inc. is building a safer intersection for pedestrians and cyclists entering the Eastside Trail at Monroe Drive.

The intersection, just outside the Park Tavern, is closed 24 hours a day until the evening of Friday, June 14th.

Detour routes guide Beltline riders and drivers along Kanuga Street to Virginia Avenue NE and Charles Allen Drive NE to 8th Street.

The Park Tavern will remain open during construction.

The project includes an elevated intersection with new crosswalks, pedestrian signage, traffic lights and a plaza.

A bike crossing will feed a new entrance to the Eastside Trail, allowing cyclists to travel from the 10th Street bike lane to the trail.

Although the intersection closure will end on Friday, construction of the new sidewalk is expected to be completed in September.

Channel 2 Action News was there when city officials broke ground on the new construction project in August to help connect the Eastside Trail through Piedmont Park.
