Major fire breaks out in apartment building in Miami, building employee found shot at the scene

A large, three-alarm fire broke out at a Miami apartment building Monday morning and a building employee was found shot at the scene, authorities said.

The fire at Temple Court Apartments started around 8:15 a.m. and is still raging, Miami Fire Rescue said shortly after noon.

“Upon arrival, several residents were rescued and evacuated,” Miami Fire Rescue said in an X post.

Many residents of the building are elderly with mobility problems and needed to be rescued from their balconies, NBCMiami reported. The fire occurred on the third floor of the building.

More than 70 firefighters and 38 fire trucks were at the scene of the ongoing blaze at 10:25 a.m., Miami Fire Rescue spokesperson Iggy Carroll told NBC News.

There are several patients as a result of the fire, including two firefighters who were taken to hospital due to heat exhaustion and one resident.

Firefighters also found one person suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived at the scene, according to Miami Fire Rescue. Temple Court Management identified the person as one of its employees, NBC Miami reported.

“We are still determining the cause of these events and checking for any other injuries. The police are investigating and we will help in any way we can,” Temple Court Management told the outlet. today, and our thoughts and prayers are with our team member and his family and residents of the Temple Court community.”

It is unclear where exactly the individual was found, whether the wound was self-inflicted. or if the incident is fire-related.

Video from the scene showed smoke coming from the building as firefighters tried to extinguish the fire outside.

Miami police are on scene assisting with the fire and have warned residents against entering nearby Lummus Park “to avoid any potential damage.”

The cause of the fire is unclear at this time.
