A TRAVELER died during a Fiji Airways flight after suffering a medical emergency.
On Saturday, a 41-year-old man reportedly needed medical intervention an hour and a half before his flight was scheduled to land at San Francisco International Airport.
Although the passenger’s name was not released, the airline revealed that he was an American citizen who was flying to California that morning on flight FJ870.
“Despite the best efforts of our cabin crew and an onboard doctor who provided immediate assistance, the passenger unfortunately passed away,” the airline said in a statement.
The crew reportedly attended to the man immediately, declaring his circumstances a medical emergency.
The flight was given priority landing by SFO authorities, where they were met by the appropriate authorities necessary to deal with the situation.
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” the airline said.
He also thanked the staff for the way the situation was handled.
“We commend our cabin crew and attending physician for their quick and professional response to this emergency,” the spokesperson said.
“Fiji Airways remains committed to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew and we are cooperating fully with the authorities as they manage this situation.”
A FLIGHT TO FIJI
A flight from Fiji to San Francisco can take up to 10 hours and 30 minutes on average.
Fiji Airways is the country’s national airline, known for flying around the world.
Passengers can expect an included meal as well as in-flight entertainment, according to the website.
They are known to serve many areas of the South Pacific, Asia, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
The airline was founded in 1947, but only began operating in 1951.
