Emergency teams launched a search operation following reports of kayakers “in difficulty on the river” near Briançon, southeast France, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police helicopters were sent to search for the stricken group, according to local reports.

Three people were found struggling in the Durance River, with two of them trying to help the third, who was believed to be unconscious.

Rescue teams removed two of the kayakers unharmed.

But the third, a British man, could not be resuscitated.

It is known that he was an experienced canoeist.

The canoeists were part of an organized group on the river, reports Dauphiné Libéré.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
