A customer became frustrated with the policy after having to show his receipt to a police officer upon leaving Kroger.

Why do I have to show my receipt to the damn sheriff’s deputies to leave Kroger now?” they asked in a tweet posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

I’m here to buy a chocolate bar.”

In a secondary post, the user wondered why the supermarket chain had such a strict anti-theft method.

“Why does Kroger think they can subject me to this *** state security bullshit?” said the shopper.

The customer started comparing Kroger to a competitor.

“Your a** is not Costco,” they stated.

Many shoppers have evaluated receipt checks and believe that since people pay for their Costco membership with rules, the retailer can ask for their receipt.

‘I FELT OFFENDED’

Several customers came forward with their Kroger receipt checking stories.

One shopper posted about a frustrating experience when an employee not only allegedly asked for the receipt but also wanted to see the inside of the bag.

She explained that she used self-checkout to scan her items because all the other lines were long.

The shopper admitted she forgot to scan two items at the bottom of her cart, but didn’t realize it before checking receipt.

“She looked at my list and said ‘Yeah, it won’t and it won’t.’ I was confused and said ‘Excuse me’ and she said ‘I also need to see the inside of her bag,'” the anonymous shopper said. posted to the Valley, Lanett and Beulah community chat on Facebook.

The Kroger customer said she actually forgot to check the bottom of her cart because she doesn’t normally put items there.

A Lawyer’s Top 5 Receipt Checking Tips

Los Angeles attorney Camron Dowlatshahi spoke with The US Sun about receipt checks and a client’s rights and options when it comes to being asked to show their receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it’s in the store, it’s completely legal. “Apparently there is nothing illegal about this. You are still on the company premises and the reason for doing this is to avoid theft”, confirms Dowlatshahi.
  2. However, if they’re kicking you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location is important,” he explained. “If you’re outside the store, you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of stealing and that you have to show the receipt, I think it’s a little bit of a different situation because now you’re in your way.”
  3. Although customers can say no to receipt checks, it can cause problems if you do so and the store suspects you of stealing. “You might say no, maybe it will create an unnecessary hassle for you because now you might have the police coming to your house and following up,” Dowlatshahi said.
  4. If you’re being blocked from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you may have legal action – but the store must have detained you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus to do it,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a client has been emotionally traumatized by being detained for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] process.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s a very simple thing to do. If you haven’t stolen anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

However, the buyer still didn’t know why the employee needed to look in her bag.

“[I] I asked her why she needed to look inside my bag, she said because I was trying to steal, she had the right to look inside my bag,” she wrote.

The shopper refused to show the Kroger employee, but he allegedly threatened to call the police if he didn’t let them see the inside of the bag.

“I showed it to her anyway because I felt offended and said no the first time, but I had nothing to hide anyway,” the shopper said.

She also said she was struggling to get in touch with a manager to share her experience.

“I personally will not return to this Kroger even though I did nothing to these people and even treated most of them like family,” they said.

A Kroger employee found her post and asked the shopper to send her a message.

“I’m the front-end manager and I’d like to know which of my cashiers did this so I can [take] take action because this shouldn’t have happened to you and I’m sorry it did,” the employee wrote.

Other customers also rebelled against the store’s reliance on self-checkout, threatening to leave.
